Nov. 09, 2012–Dying to Self in the Desert

DesertPsalm 63:1–You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.

Luke 4:1, 14–And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being forty days tempted of the devil…And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

One time I had a vision. I was walking in this great desert. The heat was pounding down on my head. Everywhere I looked I saw sand scorching under the sun’s great heat. I walked and walked for what seemed to be hours on end. I was growing weary but then I saw a turn come in the road. I praised the Lord because I thought that my walk in the desert was over. But when I made the turn it was the same thing all over again. I walked and walked in the desert. I was thirsty, sweaty, hungry and tired.

I walked again for what seemed to be even more hours and then I got weary and angry. I cried out to God in the vision. I screamed at the top of my lungs, “How much longer my God? How much further do I have to go?”

As soon as I cried out this way I heard a voice cry back to me. He said, “five more minutes.” Well, I have to be honest with you I was not prepared for such a trite answer. I thought God was mocking me. How could he consider my time in this forsaken desert in such a flippant way.

But then I saw it. There was a break on the horizon. I saw a giant bridge that spanned across an arm of the ocean. I felt refreshed just looking at this bridge. It was my road to a new place. God had provided me with the answer as quickly as he said he would.

I really believe that the desert experience is about God purging us of the old man. He brings us there so that he can kill that old sinful and impure fellow. I have come to love the desert. Not because it is such a wonderful place to be but because of who I become when I get to the other side. I become stronger and I am able to carry more of his glory and blessing in my life. I now cry out and ask God to take me there so that I will become more like him in my ways.

Do not try to escape the desert. Stay there and let God do his work in your life. Cry out for deliverance and in due time it will come your way.

Nov. 08, 2012–Check the Player before Blaming the Recorder

Woman Changing CD's in the carHas this ever happened to you?

You’re driving along listening to a CD. All of a sudden, the disc starts to wobble and the words come out garbled. Did the CD just suffer a mini-stroke?

What would you do?

My first instinct was to check the surface of the CD for scratches. None.

Could there have been a glitch in the recording process? Possibly. How do you verify it, though?

So I took it out and replaced it with another CD, after a thorough inspection for scratch marks.

The first couple of tracks played perfectly. Then the symptoms started to re-surface–skipping, sliding and slurring. What was going on? Could it be a flaw in the professional recording and/or manufacturing process? Not likely.

Upon repeating the process one final time with yet another specimen, my inner rocket scientist could finally concede that the problem was not with the recorder, but with the player.

At the suggestion of a friend, I got a cleaning CD and ran it through a couple of times. Voila! No more mini-strokes.

Jesus says in John 10:27: My sheep hear my voice.” No ifs ands or buts. No riders attached. Every follower (sheep) of Jesus (the Good Shepherd) hears his voice. Period.

So, if we are not able to hear his voice clearly, if we experience interruptions in the flow, if there is any kind of hindrance, interference or uneven modulation…is it fair to say that the problem is not with him but with us?

Isn’t it possible that there is something in us that needs to be removed? The dirt of sin, residue from past hurts, dust particles of doubt, _____________(feel free to fill in the blanks), etc.

As Jesus said: “First clean the inside.” (Matthew 23:26)

Methinks it would be wise to check the player before we blame the recorder.  Whaddyathink?

Would you kindly take a minute to scroll down and Speak Your Mind? It will be such a blessing to me and all your fellow subscribers. Thanks in advance.

Nov. 07, 2012–Who Captivates You determines Who will be Captivated by You

Our pastor friend Deborah Borozny of Eagles Nest Christian Centre recently pointed out that when 12 year-old Jesus chose to stay back in Jerusalem while his parents headed back home, he was totally captivated by his “Father’s business.” (Luke 2:40-52) Obviously this continued over the next 18 years.

Because something happens at age 30 when he embarks on his earthly ministry. After preaching just one sermon, as Jesus is walking along the seashore, he calls Peter, Andrew, James and John to follow him. Scripture records that they left what they were doing “immediately” and followed him. (Matthew 4:18-22)

Jesus has not performed a single miracle. He has not delivered the Sermon on the Mount yet. The text of the one sermon he did preach consisted only of one point delivered in one single sentence: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Not exactly the kind of eloquence that would galvanize an audience into obedience!

Jesus did not launch much of a recruitment campaign either. He made no sweet promises. He had no compelling slogan. He gave them no vision or mission statement. Yet, these fishermen were so captivated by Jesus that they were willing to walk away from their previous calling and follow him.

May I suggest to you that it was because the disciples could see in Jesus the Father who captivated him. Later on, it was said of these same disciples: “These men had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13) Clearly, they had been captivated by Jesus!

Who captivates you? Be careful! Because it determines who will be captivated by you. As an old hymn puts it:

“By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be; Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.”

Nov. 06, 2012–Just Take The Next Step

Climbing up Mt. Kilimanjaro

Our friend Regine Hüttner was describing the last leg of her journey to scale Mt. Kilimanjaro earlier this year during the Freedom Climb that she made along with 46 other women to raise awareness of the evil of human trafficking.

“I had nothing left in me physically,” she recalled. “It was more a test of whether or not I had the mental strength necessary to take the next step upward.” The beckoning peak looked too difficult to scale even at such close quarters.

How did she make it up to Uhuru, then?

She chose not to focus on making it to the top. Instead, she simply decided to take one step first, followed in slow succession by the next step and then another one. She described how when she decided to take that first step, it was as though God took over and helped her take the next step. This process continued for three agonizingly long hours before she could experience the exhilaration of reaching the summit.

Her experience reminded me of the words of a beloved hymn:

Lead, kindly Light, amid th’ encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on;
The night is dark, and I am far from home;
Lead Thou me on:
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene–one step enough for me.

If you are not able to see “the distant scene” today along the climb to your destiny, perhaps you, like Regine, just need to take the next step. And the next step. And the next step. And, before you know it, you will have made your way to Uhuru (a Swahili word that means “freedom”)!

Nov. 05, 2012–Don’t Miss Your Green Light

Opposing Traffic LightsYou’re the first car facing a red light at an intersection. What do you focus on while you’re waiting for the light to turn green? The traffic signal immediately in front of you? Or the opposing one?

I must admit that more often than not I look at the other guy’s light waiting for it to go from green to amber, so I can start revving up to zoom right through the nanosecond his light turns red and mine turns green. C’mon, fess up, you’ve done it too J

I also have to admit that sometimes I get so distracted by the opposing light that I miss it when my light turns green. It is only when the driver behind me toots a blaring reminder (sometimes accompanied by a single digit signal) that I realize what has happened! Of course, there are times when I’m the one giving the reminder (minus the hand signal, of course!). Between you and me, I feel really good doing it too!

Sad but true that we sometimes miss what is happening directly ahead of us, because we are so focused on what is happening around us.

We wait for someone else’s circumstances to change as our signal to move forward, rather than wait for our own to turn green.

In the process, we can miss an opportunity to move forward. We can end up delaying the fulfilment of our destiny.

That is why Solomon penned these wise words in Proverbs 4:25– Focus your eyes straight ahead; keep your gaze on what is in front of you. Or, as the Message Translation puts it: Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions.

We would do well to follow this advice. Amen?

Nov. 04, 2012–Eating the Bread of His Word

Boy eating slice of breadMatthew 4:4 says, “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Have you ever had the joy of eating a fresh piece of bread from the oven? When I was a boy my grandmother made the best bread. She had a big family and would make 8 loaves of bread a day. I would go over there after school or in the summer afternoon just to get a slice of that bread. I loved that bread. I would smother it with butter just to watch it melt into the texture of the slices.

That bread brought me great joy, but the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ brings me much more joy. When I receive a word from the Lord it inspires me to rest, and as I rest in the word he gives to me a certainty comes over me that it will come to pass.

Every true word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord comes to pass, and as you learn to differentiate his words from your own words or the word of the enemy great peace enters your spirit as a result.

There have been many times that I have struggled with fear regarding situations that arise in my life. When I do one of the first things I do is put my head down and I ask the Lord to speak to my heart. His assurance quickly comes like lightness in my spirit. When I sense this lightness I know he is saying “Fear not, for I am with you.” When I sense this I know no matter what I am going through it will be alright and joy quickly enters in.

When I receive the word of the Lord it is like joy to my bones. Just as bread is sustenance and nourishment to my body, his living word is sustenance and nourishment to my soul. It would be hard to live any other way now. I know that I lived without this for a long time, but I could never ever go back. I am addicted to his word for my life.

I pray that you will find rest for your soul today. I also pray that God will help you to hear his voice as you read the bible and pray. I pray that the small still voice of the Father and the joy and peace of the Holy Spirit will be close to you always. As you receive his word may joy explode in your soul and may you live in the bosom of the Lord forever.

Nov. 03, 2012–If You Could Only Pray for One Thing…

Jeeva Profile Pic from Love DareI heard a story about a very wealthy man who was deciding what to do with his estate. There were only two beneficiaries in the picture–one beloved son and one beloved servant. In the end, he told the son: “You can have your choice of one thing that belongs to me…just one thing…and the rest goes to the servant.”

The son was now faced with a decision. Should he choose the golf course? The mansion? The island? The investment portfolio? After some time, he made a choice that resulted in him owning everything that belonged to his father.

Can you guess what he chose?

Solomon had just become king of Israel. In I Kings 3 we read about how the Lord appeared to him in a vision and said: “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” “Whatever” gave Solomon quite a lot of latitude. What would he choose? Wealth? Fame? Power? Military success? A larger empire?

Of course, Solomon asks for “a discerning heart to judge the people and to distinguish right from wrong.”  God is so pleased with his request that he promises to honour his prayer and as added bonuses, offers him riches and honour! Small wonder then that he writes in Proverbs 4:7: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom.”

A number of years ago, I had the chance to ask a Christian businessman who had achieved phenomenal success in his field this question: “What all did you pray for along your journey to success?” His answer consisted of one word: “Wisdom.” When I pressed further, he said: “Well, if I had God’s wisdom to make the right choice whenever I was faced with a decision, I knew that I would be successful, because I would not make mistakes along the way.” I was very impressed with his answer.

Yes, if there is only one thing you could pray for…choose wisdom. It is the principal thing.

Okay, let’s end the suspense now. The beloved son had obviously prayed for wisdom. For, the one thing that belonged to his father that he chose was the beloved servant!!!

May I suggest a daily prayer that will propel you faster to your destiny?  “Father, grant me wisdom to make the right choices in every decision I face today.” AMEN.

Nov. 02, 2012–The Power of The Cumulative Effect

Women workout gymAre you familiar with Interval Training? It is one of the most effective ways to cut out stubborn fat that accumulates in your body in highly visible places, such as your belly. Simply put, in Interval Training you do intense cardio in short bursts followed by a lengthier period of rest. So, for example, after warming up, you pedal your bike really  hard for 15 seconds until you are out of breath, rest for 45 and repeat the process 5 or 6 times. You are also advised to do Interval Training no more than 3 times a week.

In other words, it only takes about 10 minutes (including warm-up and cool-off time) to complete a workout. Do the math and you will discover to your surprise that it takes a total commitment of just 30 minutes per week to blast belly fat off! This is in stark contrast to most cardio routines where you sit and pedal for 30-60 minutes at a time, and still don’t make much of a dent in your fat content.

Needless to say I was skeptical when I first heard about this method, but having seen enough proof that it would produce the promised results, I decided to give it a try. The first week that I was consistent with Interval Training, I must admit that I saw no visible results. My waist size was still the same and my weight had not dropped significantly at all.

When I went back and re-read the workout instructions, there was a word of advice there, something like: “Don’t expect instant results. Don’t measure your weight or your waistline until you have consistently done I.T. for at least two weeks.” Duh!

Much to my surprise, at the end of the third week, I started noticing some visible results. My pants were fitting a bit more loosely around my waist and I had indeed shed a couple of pounds.

By the time I’d stuck to it faithfully for 6 weeks, I had to add extra holes in my belts, because my waistline had shrunk significantly!

The whole exercise taught me a valuable lesson on the power of The Cumulative Effect. Let me give you another example.

My wife Sulojana has been getting up an hour early, reading the Bible and spending time in prayer every day for quite a few years now. The first year or two, I could not honestly say that I noticed a significant difference in her. But, around the third year, I became aware of an increase in her spiritual strength that would sometimes catch me by surprise. Today not only does she know her Bible much better, but she knows the heart of the Father much more intimately as well. I know that it was the sheer power of The Cumulative Effect that was responsible for this amazing change.

I also recall how when I first started to deliver destiny words to others in a small group, the accuracy of the words I delivered was nowhere close to some of my peers in the same group. When I learned that there was a direct relationship between Intimacy with the Father and accuracy in hearing His voice, I started Soaking for a few minutes a day, every day. (Soaking is simply staying still in His Presence, with quiet music playing in the background).

Once again, there was no discernible difference for the first few months, but, gradually, I began to notice a positive change in the accuracy of the words. There was no other explanation than the power of The Cumulative Effect.

May I encourage you to realize and harness this power in your life as well? Whether it is with physical exercise, a spiritual discipline or skill development, please do not get discouraged when the results are not readily apparent at the outset. As the apostle Paul reminds us in Galatians 6:9: “We shall reap in due season, if we do not give up.”

Just keep on doing what you need to do and let God help you experience the powerful blessing known as The Cumulative Effect.

Nov. 01, 2012–Entering Our Promised Lands

Darren Canning ProfileThe Promised Land was an actual location between the River of Egypt and the Euphrates River in the ancient territory of Canaan, but the symbolism of that piece of land has taken on greater meaning. Genesis 12:7 says, “The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.“ The Lord made a promise to his people in that appearance to Abram that they would possess the entire land of promise.

In the same way through Christ the Father is still making the same promise to us. He is saying that if we will seek him with all of our heart we will find him. I believe the promise land of old is both a literal place and a spiritual place. Each one of us has a spiritual territory in our hearts that God is commanding us to take. The territory of our minds and our bodies must become the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. As we press toward God he fills us deeper and deeper with his presence. His glory overtakes us and we become more like him. His peace becomes our expression and His joy our everlasting strength.

Deuteronomy 1:8 says, See, I have given you this land. Go in and take possession of the land the LORD swore he would give to your fathers — to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob —and to their descendants after them.” And just like the Israelites of old who had a choice of taking the land or accepting the idolatrous ways of the Canaanites so do we have a choice of how much we will obey the Father’s will. The Israelites at first did not believe they could inhabit the entire land of Canaan. You will remember that when the 12 spies entered the land, only two believed in the possibility that it could be conquered. This disbelief led the Israelites into 40 years of wandering the desert. Only 2 of the original group of people who were older than 20 years of age, at the time of the departure from Egypt, made it into the Promised Land – Caleb and Joshua.

How many of us are wandering in the desert of unbelief when God wishes us to walk in the glorious promised land of faith. Perhaps unbelief in the promises of God has resulted in a lack of fulfillment in your life. You have an idea of what God wanted you to accomplish, but as you look at your life you don’t feel like you have accomplished anything at all.

The Israelites had to destroy the strongholds of the enemy in the land of Canaan before they could possess that great land of promise. You will remember that they took Jericho by a miracle of God. When they did what God said the walls of that city came tumbling down. In the same way, God is saying just trust in me and the walls of depression, anxiety and fear are about to come tumbling down in your life.

But the tumbling of those walls is just the beginning for you. God is destroying these strongholds so that you may possess a greater portion. The crumbling of the city of Jericho was a sign to the inhabitants of the land of Canaan that the people of God were going to possess the entire Promised Land. In the same way, as God destroys the work of the enemy in your life it is a sign to the enemy that you will be granted the entire portion of God’s promises – yes, the entire land of Canaan where the milk and honey does flow. Come on now, hear what I am saying. This realization makes the enemy wild. He don’t want you to know for one minute that God intends you to be completely fulfilled in your life and calling. He runs scared when he sees a wall come down in your life.

The land that God gives us is a land of milk and honey. It is a place where the joy of the Lord is our strength and where we walk in the riches of the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. You do not have to walk another day without God’s peace deep in the core of your being. God was saying to the Israelites I am going to give you the entire land of promise all you have to do is believe. As we believe the Lord uses our own feet to gain the lost lands of our lives. As we walk forward by faith and carry out the acts of God we obtain the greater portions of our inheritance. He is our great King and God. He will accomplish all that he says he will accomplish in our lives.

And so I pray for you right now. I ask God to help you believe that the walled cities of your life are coming down, that he will show you how easy that really is. I pray that as you walk toward your Jericho that God will instill the greatest peace and joy within your hearts. May he grant you revelation and knowledge of the promises he has in store. And as you walk may you see these promises come to pass quickly and in God’s time.
