“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.
For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” (Exodus 20:8-11)
Sulojana and I were blessed to spend 7 days together in a cabin on the “thumb” of Michigan, close to Port Austin. It was the first time in nearly 25 years that we had taken the time to do nothing but rest on a holiday.
You may not be surprised to hear that simply unwinding was not easy. Coping with the deafening sound of silence was quite a task, but we did it. Other than a few excursions to the beach and a couple of trips to the neighbouring town on rainy days, we spent as much time as possible in the cabin—reading, writing, reflecting, soaking and sleeping.
It was quite an experience to simply rest and relax.
During this time, Holy Spirit reminded me of how much rest is valued by our heavenly Father. In the fourth commandment quote above, the people of Israel are told to “remember” the Sabbath.
God then reminds them what they need to remember. He takes them back to the very beginning and points out how He Himself rested for an entire day following the six days of Creation.
Was it because God was tired? Of course, not! He rested because He was setting a pattern for all of His Creation to follow.
Although, over the years, the “holy day” aspect of the Sabbath has turned it into a day of worship, the fact remains that the primary purpose of the Sabbath is for us to simply rest, to cease and desist from all labour.
Our bodies need down time to get us back up and motoring again. Our minds require rest to be renewed. And our spirits need a Sabbath to be refreshed by Holy Spirit.
That is the way God made us. That is how we are wired. It is not a luxury, but an absolute necessity.
Holy Spirit reminded me how easy it is for us to focus on observing the Sabbath by going to church and worshipping God and completely neglect the rest for which it was intended.
As a matter of fact, the word ‘holy’ simply means ‘set apart’. In other words, what makes the Sabbath holy is the fact that we choose to set it aside for God’s purposes, which begin with rest and end with worship.
You could call it “Idle Worship!”
Dear DWOD friend, as you advance toward your destiny, please make sure that you take the time to observe the Sabbath. Whatever you do, please do not neglect to rest as you must, as your Creator has commanded.
For when you do, you are following His pattern. And you will bring a smile to His face.
(For the record, I have decided to take Mondays off completely beginning Aug. 11. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.)
