Dec. 06–The Letter vs The Spirit of the Law

121212 Fast, Day 6“People are worth much more than sheep, and so it is right to do good on the Sabbath.” (Matthew 12:12)

Would you kindly read Matthew 12:1-14 in preparation for this revelation?

You can almost hear the legal beagles of Jesus’ day barking at him, can’t you?

“Why are your disciples picking grain on the Sabbath? They are not supposed to do that!” (v. 5)

“Is it right to heal someone on the Sabbath?” (v. 10)

Notice how Jesus deftly turns the tables on them with his responses.

He begins with an appeal to a historical fact:

“Do you not realize that David, the most revered ruler in Jewish history, dared to disobey the Law by eating bread that was only reserved for priests?”

Then Jesus moves on to a religious irony:

“Based on your premise, priests technically disobey the Law every time they serve the Lord by working on the Sabbath!”

Finally, he hits the point home at the personal level:

“If you had a sheep that fell into a ditch on the Sabbath would you let it bleat to death for fear of landing on the wrong side of the Law when you lift it out? Wouldn’t your instinct for mercy to an animal in distress overrule your insistence on keeping the Law at any cost?”

Jesus lands the hammer with a thud by healing the man with a crippled hand and drives home his point that people are worth more than sheep.

Adopting the apostle Paul’s language in 2 Corinthians 3:6, we could see this as an instance where the letter of the Law kills, but the spirit gives life.

According to the letter of the Law, David and the priests are guilty and must be punished.

Yet, God does not respond with a heavy hand. He extends an understanding arm of forgiveness instead.

Thus Jesus reflects His Father when he responds in the spirit of the Law and asks the man to stretch forth his crippled hand.

Should one of the law-hawks dare to “work” on the Sabbath by rescuing their sheep, would they prefer God to punish them according to the letter of the Law or forgive them according to the spirit of the Law?

The answer is obvious, isn’t it?

Can you relate to these Pharisees at all? I can.

Are you ready for a true confession?

When someone speeds past me on the freeway and leaves me in the dust, I would dearly love an unmarked cop car to appear out of nowhere and nail the driver with the heaviest possible fine.

However, when I get stopped for speeding, I pray that the police officer will show mercy and let me get away with the least punitive option—a warning 🙂

We would like to believe that we deserve mercy when we mess up, but others deserve punishment for the same mess-up…hello?

In other words, we want others to respond to us in the spirit of the Law even while we respond to them in the letter of the Law.

So, may I suggest that you take some time and ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you may have operated according to the letter of the Law and not the spirit?

Will you ask him also to highlight times when you have been disappointed/angry because others have not treated you in the spirit of the Law?

I believe the Lord is calling us to repent of this double standard and seek His forgiveness.

Will you?

Dec. 05, 2012–The 45 Day Difference

“God121212 Fast Day 5 will bless everyone who patiently waits until 1335 days have gone by.” (Daniel 12:12)

Prophetic visions in the book of Daniel are not the easiest to decipher and interpret.

Fear not, dear subscriber, I ain’t about to get caught in that there trap today or make an attempt to draw you in with me. Nosiree!

Instead, I want to place before you The 45 Day Difference that the Lord highlighted for me in this chapter.

Would you please take 2 minutes to read the entire chapter first? Daniel 12.

The part of the vision that is relevant for this revelation is the answer to the question: “How long before these amazing things happen?” (v. 5)

Daniel is told that some rather undesirable things will happen over a period of 1290 days.

However, those who wait an additional 45 days and hit the 1335 mark will be blessed.

Would you agree that waiting is not easy for most of us?

If you disagree, just listen to your children on Christmas Eve. “Why do we have to wait till tomorrow? Why can’t I open mine now?” Sound familiar?

Such impatience is not limited to children either. My birth family had a tradition of opening up just ONE gift on Dec. 24, because, get this, my Dad, yes, my Dad, couldn’t wait 🙂

Scripture offers us many examples of those who could not wait long enough.

I Samuel 13:7-15 recounts the sad story of how King Saul deprived his descendants the privilege of occupying his throne because he acted in haste. Saul took matters into his own hands and offered a sacrifice before the prophet Samuel arrived. He was able to wait seven days, but not the few extra hours by which Samuel was delayed. The difference it made was everlasting.

According to I Corinthians 15:6, the risen Jesus appeared to over 500 people following his resurrection. In Acts 1:4 he tells them: “Don’t leave Jerusalem yet. Wait here for the Father to give you the Holy Spirit, just as I told you he has promised to do.” Yet, just a few days later, there were only 120 left in the Upper Room (Acts 1:15).

Let’s do the math. The other 380 or more simply could not wait an additional 10 days for the promise to be fulfilled. They robbed themselves of the experience of being there when the Holy Spirit came in wind and fire. What a shame!

In fact, many Scriptures remind us of the blessings of waiting. Here are some verses:

Psalm 37:34: Wait on the LORD…and He shall exalt you to inherit the land.

Psalm 40:1:I waited patiently for the LORD; and He heard my cry.

Hebrews 6:15: Abraham waited patiently and received what was promised.

As you look back at your life, can you identify times when you have experienced the blessings of “waiting until 1335 days have gone by?” Praise God!

Do you have stories to share about how you could not get past the 1290 day mark and suffered the consequences?  Praise God, because now you know better!

Do the math again. Do you realize that after 1290 days you are already 96% of your way there? You just need to stick it out for the remaining 4% and you’re in the Blessing Zone!

Do you know anyone who is going through the pain of quitting too soon? Pray with empathy for their plight. Ask God to grant them the inner strength to keep going till they reach the 1335 day mark.

On this fifth day of the 12:12:12 Fast, my prayer for you is that you will indeed be one who recognizes and realizes the blessings of The 45 Day Difference.

Dec. 04, 2012–Enduring Root, Enduring Fruit

Day 4 of 12:12:12 fast“Whoever is wicked covets the spoil of evildoers, but the root of the righteous bears fruit.” (Proverbs 12:12)

The word “bears” is in the present tense, suggesting an ongoing, continual reality.

Other translations refer to the roots “enduring”, “going deep” and “standing firm.”

Jeremiah 17:8 says this about the righteous: They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Clearly there is a correlation between the enduring quality of the root and the fruit-bearing fruit capacity of the tree.

Psalm 1:3 which resembles the verse from Jeremiah in many ways, refers to the tree bearing fruit “in season.”

Once again it reinforces the fact that a tree with deep, firm roots can be expected to produce fruit on a continual basis.

According to John 15:16, Jesus expects his followers not just to bear fruit, but “fruit that will last.”

A root that endures produces fruit that endures. Amen?

In the well-known parable of the sower and the seed, Jesus says: “Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.”

No wonder that we see a repeated emphasis on the root in Scripture. Here are a couple of snippets from the writings of the apostle Paul:

“Be rooted and built up in him, be established in faith, and overflow with thanksgiving just as you were taught.” (Colossians 2:7)

“…you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17-19)

As we examine our rootedness and resulting fruitfulness on this fourth day of the 12:12:12 fast, would the word “enduring” be an apt description of both?

Would you characterize the fruit of the spirit that your life is producing right now as being “enduring?”

Or is it marked by sporadic outbursts of fruitfulness followed by bouts of barrenness?

Would you ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the true nature of your root today?

If it is anything less than enduring, would you ask him to show you what you need to do to produce fruit that endures?

I pray that your life may be marked by Enduring Root that produces Enduring Fruit.

Dec. 02, 2012–Is Worship Your Highest Priority?

Day 2 Deuteronomy 12:12“And you shall rejoice before the Lord your God, you and your sons and your daughters, your male servants and your female servants, and the Levite that is within your towns, since he has no portion or inheritance with you.” (Deuteronomy 12:12)

The book of Deuteronomy contains words that Moses gave to the people of Israel as they were poised to enter the Promised Land.

He paints beautiful pictures of how prosperous life would be in the Promised Land. He also rings alarm bells of the dangers that await them.

He points out the blessings of living in obedience to God’s commands. He also minces no words about the disastrous consequences of disobedience.

The passage from which today’s 12:12 verse is taken is no exception. Would you please take two minutes to read Deuteronomy 12:1-14?

Now do you see what I mean?

If you were to read verse 12 in isolation, all you would see is a group of happy people joining together in a celebration dance.

But before they can cut loose with happiness, they need to take care of some serious business.

The chapter begins with a stern command:

“You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree.  You shall tear down their altars and dash in pieces their pillars and burn their Asherim with fire. You shall chop down the carved images of their gods and destroy their name out of that place.” (v. 2, 3)

God calls for a ruthless elimination of every object of worship that could conspire to turn their hearts away from Him.

He emphasizes this exclusive attention to Him with a demand:

“Then, to the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name dwell there, there you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices,  your tithes and the contribution that you present, and all your finest vow offerings that you vow to the  Lord.” (v. 11)

He insists that they worship only at the location designated for that express purpose and nowhere else.

Can you see how God establishes WORSHIP as the highest priority for His people when they are in the Promised Land and enjoy rest from all their enemies?

Has anything changed for us today?

Granted we do not have to go to one particular central shrine as the people of Israel did. Jesus made that very clear in his conversation with the Samaritan woman, didn’t he?

“Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father…But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” (John 4:21, 23)

Regardless, as we enter Day 2 of the 12:12:12 Fast, I believe that we too are called to ensure that we establish WORSHIP as the highest priority in our lives.

This means that we too must rid ourselves of everything that will compete for our attention and prevent us from making our Father the ONLY focus of our worship.

Would you ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what needs to be on your chopping block?

It calls us to gather with others who are also worshipers of the One True God, followers of Jesus, in a place where we can worship in spirit and in truth.

Are you doing this faithfully?

God asks that we come with our tithes, our sacrifices and our finest offerings.

Would these words describe what you bring to the altar?

When we do all three, then the joyous scene of celebration portrayed in Deuteronomy 12:12 will become reality now, as it was then, in our “Promised Land” as well. Amen?

Dec. 01, 2012–PRESSING IN FOR FULFILLMENT

The 12:12:12 Fast, Day 1For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on  all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. (Exodus 12:12)

The Exodus of the people of Israel from Egypt begins with a promise from Yahweh given through Moses: “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey…” (Exodus 3:7, 8)

He follows up this promise with plague after plague after plague–9 to be exact–by the time we get to Chapter 12.

The emotions of the people of Israel must have gone up and down like a yo-yo with every plague.

Pharaoh promises to let them go. Pharaoh hardens his heart. Pharaoh refuses to let them go. This cycle has been repeated 9 times already.

Will the cycle ever be broken? When will God’s promise be fulfilled–finally?

Can you relate to the people of Israel at all?

Are there promises that you have received from God that are yet to be fulfilled?

Have you been on a similar roller-coaster ride of emotions?

I am sensing that most, if not all of us, are in that place, at least on one particular promise.

Personally, Sulojana and I are still waiting for the fulfillment of words spoken over us by anointed prophetic voices that were clearly meant for the calendar year 2012.

11 months have come and gone. Still no sign of their fulfillment. Granted, there have been glimpses here and there. There have been hints. False labour pains, but no birth.

And, yes, we have been preparing ourselves in every way that we know how to receive these promises in their finished form.

This is a critical time when we are faced with a number of choices.

We could be tempted to give up on their fulfillment at this late hour.

We may doubt the accuracy of the word and question the hearing ability of the prophetic voice that delivered the promise.

We may even conclude that it is not God’s will.

This is why the Lord has placed before us this verse from Exodus 12:12 on this first day of The 12:12:12 Fast.

He wants to remind us that “Behold, the Lords hand is not shortened that it cannot save; nor His ear heavy, that it cannot hear.” (Isaiah 59:1)

He wants to give us hope that the promise can still be fulfilled before the end of this year.

He wants us to know that He can change our circumstances overnight.

He can eliminate our enemies in one fell swoop.

He can bring about a sudden change of heart in those who are impeding our progress.

That is what He promised the people of Israel through Moses.

God would keep His word and do His part. They were now expected to do their part, which included painting their doorposts with the blood of the Passover lamb (as found in Exodus 12:3-11).

Did the promise reach its fulfillment? You bet! The 10th and final plague was all it took for the yo-yo to turn into a yeah-yeah, Yahweh!

This is why I encourage you to take inventory right now.

Make a list of all the promises that are yet to be fulfilled in your life now.

Include prayers that remain unanswered up to this point.

Ask the Holy Spirit which ones you should bring before the God of the Exodus.

Believe that what He did for His people way back then He will do for you now.

Do I hear a loud Amen?

Nov. 30, 2012–The Accountability Factor

Josh HamiltonBack in January of this year, baseball fans were shocked to hear that four-time All Star and 2010 American League MVP Josh Hamilton had gone on a drinking binge in a Dallas bar.  You may recall that drugs and alcohol had kept Hamilton out of baseball for a four-year period. He had publicly credited his faith in Jesus with helping him overcome these addictions.

Soon it became apparent that one of the main reasons for this relapse was the departure of Hamilton’s accountability partner from the Texas Rangers to the Milwaukee Brewers. Johnny Narron had travelled with the Rangers and watched over Hamilton as a mentor and counselor for the previous four years. Once in January 2009, Hamilton had slipped away from Narron while working out in Phoenix and ended up in a bar where he became severely intoxicated. Realizing how significant it was for Hamilton to have an accountability partner, the Rangers immediately found a replacement in the person of Shayne Kelley.

It should not surprise us to know that the Scriptures stress the importance of accountability for every follower of Jesus. Our first and highest accountability is to God Himself. (Romans 14:12) But we are also called to accountability relationships with others. Here are three examples:

1 Thessalonians 5:11—“Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, just as you are in fact doing.” The Greek word translated “encourage” is parakaleo, which literally means “to come alongside another to help.” Oikodomeo, the Greek word translated “build up” literally refers to building a house. Does this verse not describe accurately what an accountability partner is meant to do—to come alongside us and help us stay on track and build us up?

James 5:16—“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” This verse acknowledges that in a relationship where there is accountability, there needs to be humility to “fess up” when we slip up. The proper response to such vulnerability is prayer support. The promised result is nothing short of astonishing…Healing!

Hebrews 10:24—“And let us consider how to stir up (provoke) one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another…” Clearly, the purpose of accountability is to spur one another on to be like Jesus. This can only be accomplished by meeting together regularly.

The late Chuck Colson of Prison Fellowship ministries used to meet regularly with a small group of men. At their meetings, they would ask each other the following seven questions:

1. Have you been with a woman anywhere this past week that might be seen as compromising?

2. Have any of your financial dealings lacked integrity?

3. Have you exposed yourself to any sexually explicit material?

4. Have you spent adequate time in Bible study and prayer?

5. Have you given priority time to your family?

6. Have you fulfilled the mandates of your calling?

7. Have you just lied to me?

Notice how these questions demand vulnerability and humility of everyone in the group. Notice also that with such transparency, there is room for confession, prayer support and encouragement. This is a great example of The Accountability Factor at work.

Do you have an accountability partner or group that helps you stay on track? If yes, praise God! If not, perhaps now is the time to seek and find one.

If you are joining us in the 12:12:12 fast beginning tomorrow, may I suggest that you find a partner who will keep you accountable every day? It will dramatically increase your chances of being on track.

Nov. 29, 2012–Christian Speech Therapy

Jeeva in suit Movember 2012“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21)

“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45)

These are only two of many verses in the Bible that stress the importance of the words we speak. Words create worlds. Words not only describe reality, they can destroy, in reality.

This is why in yesterday’s post, where we introduced the 12:12:12 Fast from Dec. 1-12, we emphasized the need to refrain from The 4 C’s—Criticizing, Condemning, Complaining and Comparing.

As valuable as refraining from destructive talk may be, it is equally important to replace those words with a different reality.

Input determines output. Output determines outcome.

That is why David prayed: “Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.” (Psalm 141:3).

So, we begin by editing our input and auditing our output. And we practise Christian Speech Therapy. Here is a script you can use.

• I am a child of God, a joint heir with Christ. All that the Father has is mine. I lack nothing. He supplies all my need according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus and grants the desires of my heart when I delight in Him. He makes all things work together for my good.

 • I am fully forgiven and free of all guilt and condemnation. I am seated in heavenly places with Christ. I stay healthy and healed in body, soul and spirit. I have the mind of Christ. The Holy Spirit helps me make wise choices.

 • Therefore I am anxious about nothing. In everything I give thanks. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  No weapon formed against me will prosper. When I lay hands on the sick, they recover. When I share the gospel, I make disciples of the nations. Everyone in my family is saved and passionately serving the Lord. I am blessed to be a blessing.

You will notice that The Speech Therapy Script is simply a compilation of 21 different verses from the Bible. Together they constitute a powerful package of potent promises that God makes to all who are part of His family through faith in Christ.

Please read them out aloud with conviction and at least some emotion right now.  Can you not feel the power of God that is latent in them? Wow!

We discovered that when we practised this Christian Speech Therapy at least once a day for a minimum of 21 days, we began to experience changes in ourselves.

(Science has proved that when we repeat new thought patterns 21 to 30 days in a row, new neural pathways are developed in the brain, leading to new behaviour. Isn’t that astounding?)

No longer could the enemy convince us to believe his lies about our identity as children of God, our inheritance or our position in Christ.

The voice that reminded us of past failures and tried to arouse guilt would be promptly silenced by the affirmation: “I am fully forgiven and free of all guilt and condemnation.”

We actually found it difficult to make unwise choices, as we began to realize that “we have the mind of Christ” (I Corinthians 2:16) and the help of the Holy Spirit.

Get the picture?

Now you know why we stress the significance of Christian Speech Therapy.

Let the first session begin right now!

Nov. 28, 2012–Interval Training for the Soul

girl on exercise bikeOver the past three years, we have experienced several periods of fasting in the two churches I pastor (Morgan’s Point & Forks Road East) in Wainfleet Township in the South Niagara region of Ontario, Canada.

Whether the fasts last 10, 11, 21 or 40 days, they always produce two distinct results.

  1. We are guaranteed to experience breakthroughs in health, relationships, finances–you name it, we got it!

2.  We can count on witnessing incredible changes in ourselves–in every realm–spiritual, mental, emotional and physical.

For example, this Lenten season’s version, which started out being “Forty Days of Fasting Plus” eventually got dubbed as “The 4 C’s Fast”.

It was based on a verse from that famous passage on fasting in Isaiah 58 which includes this simple injunction to “put away the pointing finger and malicious talk” (v. 9).

The idea was deceptively simple: Refrain from Criticizing, Condemning, Complaining and Comparing. But it was by no means easy.

Some remarked that they would have much preferred to stay away from another set of 4 C’s instead–Chocolate, Chips, Cookies and Candy!

Those who stuck to it faithfully discovered that it had a greater impact on their lives than anyone could’ve imagined.

Sulojana and I have found it very difficult to allow any of the 4 C’s to creep into our speech ever since. When we do, we catch each other in the act with a well-timed “4 C’s!” followed by a very predictable liturgical response: “Oops!”

Several days back, in another post I wrote about Interval Training, where you alternate short intervals of intense physical exertion with longer periods of rest and repeat several times. Repeat every other day. It will take no longer than 10-15 minutes in total per session, but the effect in reducing and eliminating stubborn belly fat is nothing short of amazing.

I am now beginning to realize that Fasting for short periods is more like Intervals for the soul! It involves putting up with pain/discomfort for a short period of time, but the results are long-lasting and very noticeable.

We are being led to exercise one more Fasting Interval this year.  We’ve labelled it THE 12:12:12 FAST.

Beginning Dec. 1 and ending Dec. 12, it will last a relatively short period of 12 days.  The purpose of this fast is twofold:

  1. PRESS IN for fulfilment of promises and prophetic words in the first 12 days of the 12th month of the 12th year.
  2. PRESS ON toward God’s future plans for us in 2013 & beyond.

On a PERSONAL level, we encourage you to make a list of what remains unfulfilled in 2012, so you can press in for their fulfilment. Seek the Lord for revelation regarding what He has in store for you in 2013.

CORPORATELY, there will be a Directive for every day of the Fast, based on twelve “12:12” Scriptures, that will come out as daily revelations on www.destinywordoftheday.com.

As with all our fasts, what you give up FOOD/DRINK-wise is between you and the Lord. Please consult your physician if you need assistance.

  • Please refrain from THE 4 C’s.
  • Reduce/Cut out your MEDIA intake–e.g. TV, Internet, Facebook.
  • INCREASE QUIET TIME in God’s Presence by 5 minutes a day.
  • INPUT THE WORD OF GOD at least once a day through Scripture Readings and the Speech Therapy Script (tomorrow’s topic!).

We invite you to join us on the 12:12:12 Fast and experience the lasting effects of Interval Training for your soul.

Nov. 22, 2012–Thankful for What we Cannot See

Thanksgiving CoruncopiaA popular song by Paul Baloche and Don Moen contains these lines:                                                                                                            For all You’ve given to me,                                                                For all the blessings I cannot see,                                                    Thank You, Lord! Thank You, Lord!

On this American Thanksgiving Day, may I suggest that we focus on giving thanks for that which is not readily visible or apparent? Here is a list to get you started.

1. Generational Blessings that were passed down from our ancestors. Sometimes we tend to focus on the illnesses, character flaws, sinful tendencies and other unwelcome flotsam from our genetic pool. How about lifting up with gratitude the welcome gifts we received unsolicited instead? Innate talents, creativity, godly heritage and ___________ (please fill in the blanks).

2. Foundational Blessings, which, like the foundation of a house, are not visible. Shall we give thanks for the first stewards and settlers of our country, the first members of our families who immigrated and paved the way for us to be here today, the vision which guided the founders of our nation, the values that undergird our constitution, and ________________ (your turn!)

3. Freedoms and Privileges we enjoy today that were purchased at a premium price, mostly by people who are anonymous to us. Let gratitude flood our hearts for those who laid down their lives for us, those who continue to place their lives at risk so we can continue to exercise our freedom of choice without fear of reprisal in political, religious, social, economic and ___________spheres? (Good choice!)

4. Blessings in disguise which can only be celebrated with gratitude in retrospect: a crisis that shaped us into being who we are today, a seemingly insurmountable obstacle that produces an incredible story of overcoming, an unceremonious job loss that leads to unparalleled success and _________, all of which confirm the certitude of Romans 8:28: “In ALL THINGS God works for the good of those who love Him.”

5. Serendipitous Blessings which are often erroneously described as “coincidence”–chance meetings that led to choice opportunities, blind dates that blossomed into marriage, “lucky to be at the right time at the right place with the right person” stories that ended with lives being saved and changed, and ______________ (feel free to use additional pages, eh?)

6. Prayers at work on our behalf of which we were blissfully unaware. Children who have come (back) to Jesus because “my mother’s prayers followed me”, peace in the midst of the most troubling circumstances, miraculous healings and supernatural interventions that defy logical explanation and _____________ (Wow! What a testimony!)

What else would you add to the list? Please feel free to share them with the rest of us.

But first, shall we sing?

Nov.21–Pulling Out by the Roots

Weed with long rootYesterday’s post “How to Kill the Old Self”, which advocated the spiritual equivalent of “horticultural homicide” by neglect and starvation, elicited a response from another faithful DWOD subscriber.

She wondered about the value of killing a plant simply by pulling it out by the roots, i.e. “the prayer/counseling approach.”

Great point, Susanna! Thanks for bringing up this vital method that is used widely across the Body of Christ to bring about healing and restoration to many.

Sulojana and I can attest to the effectiveness of this approach after spending 15 hours of intensive ministry through prayer counsellors Daryl & Lynn Hovey using the RTF (Restoring The Foundations) model nearly two years ago.

It was one of the best investments of time and money we have ever made, as we allowed the Holy Spirit to help us pull out bitter roots (Hebrews 12:15) that we had allowed to grow in our spirits (among other things). The freedom we experienced was priceless!

At the end of the Healing Week, they sent us home with some specific instructions on how to maintain this freedom and keep the enemy’s access points glued shut for good.

I must admit that I have not always faithfully stuck to the follow-up process. Consequently, I have been sensing the need for more prayer ministry in the very near future.

The Holy Spirit brought some revelation about how subsequent sessions could be even more effective when I made a casual observation in the process of cleaning up our yard yesterday.

I noticed that the same noxious weeds which had protested violently to being uprooted while they were still flourishing came out with nary a whimper once they had been famished to death!

In other words, even in the natural, it is easier to pull out a dead plant by the roots than a live one!

Makes me wonder what would happen if I were more intentional about neglecting and starving my old self to death. At the next prayer/counselling ministry session, would whatever remains be pulled out by the roots with less difficulty…and more completely?

What do you think?
